Tip 10: "Solve the rebid problem"
These hands were played in the 2021 African Trials = Mixed Teams = Egypt v/s Tunisia
A sensible opening by North, making it easy for partner to respond.
Net gain = 650 - 200 = 450 = 10 IMPs to Tunisia
Imagine if the bidding had gone 1 and partner responds 2, what is the correct rebid? Do remember that partner is a passed hand. Can you see the problem? To alleviate this the trend now is to open 1NT with any 5-3-3-2, even if the 5-carder is a major suit.
On the actual hand partner deducted a point for the pancake shape, yet could respond 3, especially if playing drury.
TIP: 1NT can be opened on the following shapes: 4-3-3-3, 4-4-3-2, 5-4-2-2, 6-3-2-2, 4-4-4-1*, 5-4-3-1*, 6-3-3-1*
* where the singleton must be an ace, king or queen. The laws were changed 4 years ago (we adopted the new ACBL wording).
